“Charity is the root of all good works.”
Pihimbuwa is a village that, to this day, still has no access to clean drinking water. Residents depend on a well whose untreated water poses significant health risks: bacteria, viruses and other pathogens. Drinking this water, or using it to cook or wash, exposes families in the village — especially children — to preventable illnesses on a daily basis.
In many rural areas of Sri Lanka, this reality remains unfortunately common: the lack of water treatment infrastructure is not a lack of will, but a lack of technical and financial resources. This is precisely the gap our project aims to fill, at the scale of one village.
It was from this observation that our project was born. We wanted to take concrete action, offering not only a lasting technical solution, but also our own time and energy on the ground, by traveling there ourselves to support the system’s implementation.
In December, the village of Pihimbuwa was hit by severe flooding, further worsening residents’ vulnerability and their access to water. These events highlighted, with even greater urgency, how fragile local infrastructure is in the face of climate-related risks.
One of our team members comes from this very village, and from this context — it was this person who came up with the idea for the project and wanted to rally the group to take concrete action alongside their community. This personal connection to Pihimbuwa was the starting point of the whole adventure: from a simple idea shared between classmates, the project grew, over the following months, into a fully structured initiative, complete with partners, funding and a clear action plan.
