Thanks to the generous contribution of Luminor Environmental Inc., a Canadian manufacturer specializing in UV systems, our project benefits from a high-precision water filtration and purification system. This equipment is the core of the village’s drinking water supply infrastructure.
The system uses ultraviolet (UV) technology to eliminate bacteria, viruses and other microorganisms present in the water, without adding any chemicals. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, it can eliminate up to 99.99% of pathogens.

Once filtered, the water passes through a stainless steel reactor where it is exposed to UV light at 254 nm. This irradiation damages the DNA and RNA of microorganisms, preventing them from reproducing — making the water safe to drink, without any chemical additives and without altering its taste.
The UV system was sized to supply drinking water to every household in the village of Pihimbuwa. Robust and durable, it is designed to be maintained locally over the long term.
